Hampton Morris is only 20 years old, but he is ranked second in his weight class and is expected to be a contender for a podium spot in Paris. Morris stunned everyone at the Olympic Trials in April by lifting 176 kg in the clean and jerk, setting a new world record in the 61 kg weight class, according to the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Team.
In Olympic history, the U.S. weightlifting team has won 47 medals, but the U.S. men have not won a team Olympic medal since Guy Carrollton (110 kg) won bronze and Mario Martinez (over 110 kg) won silver at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
“We couldn’t be more excited about these five athletes and what they represent for the development of elite weightlifting in the United States,” said Matt Sicchio, CEO and president of USA Weightlifting. “These five athletes fought tooth and nail through a rigorous qualification process to earn a spot on this team, and throughout the process, they have represented themselves, their families and our country outstandingly. We can’t wait to cheer them on in Paris.”
Here is the full Team USA lineup:
- Jordan Delacruz (49kg)
- Wes Kitt (102 kg)
- Hampton Morris (61kg)
- Olivia Reeves (71kg)
- Mary Theisen-Lappen (+81 kg)
