Of the 543 candidates who won in India’s 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 504 were billionaires, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), signalling a sharp rise in the number of ultra-rich politicians entering Parliament.

The ADR report, released on Thursday, found that the percentage of wealthy candidates winning in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be 93 percent, up from 88 percent in the 2019 election and 82 percent in the 2014 election.

“Of the 543 elected officials analysed, 504 (93%) have assets over £10 million. Of the 539 MPs analysed for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 475 (88%) have assets over £10 million. Of the 542 MPs analysed for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, 443 (82%) have assets over £10 million. Of the 543 MPs analysed for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, 315 (58%) have assets over £10 million,” the ADR report states.

Who are the top three richest MPs in the 18th House of Representatives?

The top three richest candidates to win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are Dr Chandra Sekhar Penmasani from Andhra Pradesh, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy from Telangana and Naveen Jindal from Haryana. The least wealthy winning candidate, Jyotirmay Singh Mahato, is also from the BJP.

Dr Chandra Sekhar Penmasani, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy and Naveen Jindal are the top three candidates to win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Chandra Sekhar Penmasani of the TDP is the richest newly elected MP.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Dr Chandra Sekhar Penmasani is the richest of the newly elected MPs. The TDP leader won the election from Guntur constituency in Andhra Pradesh and has a total net worth of ₹5,705 crores. Politicians in Andhra Pradesh hold movable assets. ₹5,598 crore, while real estate was Rs. ₹106 crores.

Konda Vishweshwar Reddy of the BJP is second on the list.

Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, the BJP candidate who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Chevella constituency in Telangana, is the second richest candidate to win the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Vishweshwar’s total assets are ₹4,568 crores.

BJP’s Naveen Jindal is third on the list.

Businessman and politician Naveen Jindal is the third-richest member of Congress. ₹Total assets: Rs 1,241 crore. He won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Kurukshetra constituency in Haryana.

BJP has the richest candidate

According to the average assets per winner data compiled by ADR in its report, the average assets per winner of the 240 winning BJP candidates is ₹50.04 crores. The average assets of the 99 successful INC candidates is ₹22.93 crore, while the 37 SP candidates have an average net worth of Rs. ₹15.24 crore, 29 AITC candidates have an average net worth of Rs. ₹17.98 crore and the average assets of the 16 winning TDP candidates was Rs. ₹442.26 crores.
