The 2024 Kentucky Derby is approaching.
Post positions were drawn Saturday ahead of the 150th annual horse race to be held May 4 at Louisville’s legendary Churchill Downs. The draw to determine each horse’s starting gate is traditionally held on the Monday before the race, but this year it was held a full week before.
Posts 5 and 10 have produced more winners since the Kentucky Derby began using starting gates in 1940, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. But post position alone doesn’t determine success. Mage won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with a time of 2 minutes 01 seconds from one of the most disadvantageous positions, Post 8, with veteran jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado.
