The second major of the 2024 golf season is here, and many big players are looking to get in shape for the rest of the season. As his May picturesque surrounding Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club, the PGA Championship returns to the city for the first time in 10 years.
No one puts more pressure on his shoulders than Scotty Scheffler. He is trying to become the first golfer since 2015 to win the first two major championships this year. Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, not only made back-to-back starts on the PGA Tour, he has won four of the last five tournaments he has played. Scheffler’s play gave some legitimacy to Grand Slam talk. The PGA also marks the second leg of his personal Slam journey, even if he can’t finish it this year, as his mantle of major championships in the past three years now consists of two green jackets. 18 holes throughScheffler leads the clubhouse with a five-shot lead over leader Xander Schauffele, who remains in the clubhouse lead at Valhalla. Made major championship history (again) by shooting a 9-under 62tied for the lowest round in a major and set a record for lowest round in a PGA Championship.
Just behind Scheffler on the odds board entering the tournament are Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy, both of whom have won their past two starts. McIlroy is tied with Koepka and Scheffler for the lead, four strokes behind him. As the reigning PGA Champion, Koepka is aiming for his second straight victory at this tournament and his fourth in seven years. McIlroy hasn’t played a major since his last PGA play at Valhalla 10 years ago, but he’s clearly comfortable with the course, dominating the familiar venue at Quail Hollow to win the Wells Fargo Championship. The 106th PGA Championship will be CBS Sports’ 34th consecutive broadcast (41st overall) and will be broadcast on multiple platforms throughout the week. CBS Sports, in partnership with the PGA of America, will lead the overall production effort, deploying 125 cameras and nearly 150 microphones to capture every sight and sound.
