2024 is a key year for democracies around the world, with around 40 countries preparing for elections. Notably, major economies such as the US, UK and France are set to vote in a move that could reshape the world order with 42% of global GDP having a say.

Earlier this year, countries including India, Russia, Pakistan and Bangladesh had already exercised their right to vote, setting the stage for broader democratic participation.

2024 UK Election

All eyes are on the UK general election on July 4th, with the incumbent Conservative leader Rishi Sunak facing a stiff challenge from Labour’s Keir Starmer.

according to Parents, Mr Sunak is trailing by 20 points in the polls, but despite the delay he remains optimistic. “It ain’t over till it’s over,” he wrote in a recent post on X.

Earlier, he had also raised slogans like “Don’t hand over pensions to workers” as part of his election campaign. The current Prime Minister also emphasised his “Hindu faith” when he sought divine blessings with Akshata Murthy at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (also known as Neasden Temple) in London last weekend.

His rival, Keir Starmer, has stressed Labour’s commitment to wealth creation and aims to end 14 years of Conservative rule marked by Brexit chaos and leadership changes.

Keir Starmer said wealth creation was Labour’s “number one priority.” Her victory would mark the end of 14 years of Conservative rule, the latter of which was marked by a succession of Conservative prime ministers, with the economic and political fallout from Brexit underway.

2024 US Election

Joe Biden, the incumbent US President and leader of the Democratic Party, has run for a second term to lead the country. With the Republican Party fielding impeached former President Donald Trump and Indian businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Biden is set to face stiff competition.

But Joe Biden may have an advantage: Newswires are reporting that senior Democratic Party officials have ruled out the possibility of him replacing President Biden. Reuters During Sunday’s debate, Biden expressed confidence in his victory, saying, “I think Biden is going to win the election.” After the lackluster debate, the party called for a focus on how it will affect Trump’s term in office. Party officials such as Raphael Warnock and Hakeem Jeffries stressed the need to stay positive and endorsed Biden’s candidacy.

United States citizens will exercise their right to vote on November 5, 2024.

French parliamentary elections 2024

France is preparing for major political changes ahead of parliamentary elections. President Emmanuel Macron has called for early parliamentary elections following the victory of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party in the recent European Parliament elections. The first round of voting on June 30 showed that the National Rally party was gaining momentum.

As French voters prepare for a runoff election on July 7, the outcome will determine the composition of the National Assembly and influence President Macron’s political future.

Polls will determine the outcome. Media reports said the far-right National Rally party held a large lead in the first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday. Pollsters predict that such a gain will give the party a better chance of forming a government in the second round, The Associated Press reported.

Austria, Uruguay and Georgia are also among countries with elections scheduled to take place between September and December.
