Cincinnati Police Department Capt. Mark Barnes said five men were shot in the area of Highland Avenue and East University Avenue, less than a mile from the campus.
The shootout began about 2:50 a.m., Barnes told the Cincinnati Enquirer, a USA Today Network subsidiary.
Barnes told The ENQUIRER that officers patrolling the area heard multiple gunshots and responded to the scene to find four gunshot victims, one of whom died.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital
Paramedics took the other three victims to hospital, where doctors pronounced two dead, police spokesman Lt. Jonathan Cunningham told USA Today on Monday.
At some point, a fifth person was taken to the same hospital for treatment for at least one gunshot wound.
Cunningham said two of the victims remained in stable condition late Monday morning.
“The victims are all male and their ages have not been confirmed at this time,” Cunningham said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic incident. It is truly heartbreaking.”
One person detained by police
At the scene, officers observed an individual with a gun running into the home, who eventually came out of the home voluntarily and was taken into police custody.
“We don’t know if he was the shooter or if he was concealing a weapon. We have no idea,” Burns said.
“Stay in your place.”
At 2:54 a.m. ET, the University of Cincinnati Department of Public Safety issued an alert regarding a shooting investigation involving X.
