AI uses facial shape to detect political leanings: study

(NewsNation) — Artificial intelligence can determine a person’s political leanings just by looking at the shape of their face, and it can do so with high accuracy, according to a new study.

The study, co-authored by Stanford researcher Michal Kosinski, shows that AI can recognize conservatives and liberals with a 70% success rate by just taking into account small nuances in facial features.

Research shows that liberals tend to have smaller, shorter faces, while conservatives tend to have larger, broader faces.

Kosinski, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, told “The Hill” that thousands of small physical characteristics can be tied to a person’s psychological characteristics, such as their political views. “It’s not surprising,” he said.

“How we look affects how people treat us,” Kosinski said. “And if people treat us differently over the course of our lives, that will change your political orientation.”

The Stanford University professor said that attractive people tend to be paid more, receive regular promotions, get better grades and win more political elections. All of these tend to affect facial features over time, Kosinski added.

Furthermore, the professor says political affiliation will also influence how people spend their free time.

“Whether you’re sitting somewhere in the basement or shooting ducks outside can also affect the appearance of your face,” Kosinski says.

Kosinski believes AI will never reach a 100% success rate, but experts say the technology is “increasingly accurate” in predicting intimate human characteristics. He said he was watching.
