Saturday was the perfect day for a Denver bookstore to open at its new location, but the weather ruined another owner’s plans.

DENVER — A decades-old Denver bookstore is back in business after a grand opening on a chilly, rainy Saturday.

After 40 years on East Mississippi Avenue, Bookies is now located in a separate building at the corner of South Holly Street and East Evans Avenue.

“This is a big move,” Nicole Sullivan said. “We are very optimistic about the future.”

Sullivan said the new store is located on the site of an old storefront with an old fireplace, allowing the company to create more cozy reading opportunities.

A fireplace was needed on Saturday as cold rain and snow poured down outside the store all day.

That didn’t stop dozens of customers from coming in to check out the new store.

“When I first saw the pouring rain and snow this morning, I thought, ‘Oh no, what are the possibilities?'” Sullivan said. “But if it was really beautiful outside, people would want to go outside. Well, thank you Mother Nature!”

Some business owners, like Blaine Baggao, are less appreciative.

He had hoped to open Moonrise Garden Bar after a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday night at his new location in Wheat Ridge. However, rain and snow forced the store to close on what was supposed to be a busy Saturday.

Mr Baggao said he was hopeful for better weather on Sunday.

“I’m planning on going tomorrow so I’ll see what the ground looks like. Hopefully the sun will come out,” he said.

Back at the bookstore, Sullivan knows that when the beautiful spring days arrive, his store will be the last place kids want to be. For now, she plans to savor the moment, grateful for the latest chapter in Colorado’s wild weather story.
