Bus surfing stunts, the latest ‘dangerous’ trend among New York City youth

This is the latest stunt to join the dangerous traffic trend of surfing inside subway cars.

“If something is stupid, reckless and dangerous, teens will think about how to do it,” said straphanger Pamelda Candusso Hirsch, 71. post.

Mustafa Sawaneh, who has been driving New York City buses on intercity routes for six years, said children are putting their lives in danger.

“If a taxi cuts in front of me, I have to slam on the brakes. If someone comes onto the road, I have to move the bus to the side,” said Sawaneh, 26.

“When you’re surfing[on the subway]you can see the curves of the train ahead and what’s going to happen. But when you’re surfing on the bus, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The bus drivers suspected that the passengers had climbed onto the vehicle while it was stopped for a 10-minute break.

Veteran driver Jason Williams, 40, said, “The bus driver will need to check (the top of the bus) before departure,” adding that from the driver’s seat he could see that there was no one on top of the bus. He added that it is impossible to tell whether there are any.

At least two people have died this year outside trains. Last year, at least five teenagers died on the roof of a subway. MTA spokesman Dave Steckel said the agency is investigating.

New York City and state officials are cracking down on transit surfers, saying they’re a growing number of teenagers trying to imitate what they see on social media.
