Uber announced on Tuesday that it has decided to cease operating its ride-hailing app in Pakistan.

“We have made the decision to discontinue operations of the Uber app in Pakistan,” an Uber spokesperson said. dawn.com.

“Our subsidiary brand Careem will continue to operate and the Careem app will provide ride-hailing services across Pakistan and provide drivers with the opportunity to earn an income,” the spokesperson added.

In 2019, Uber acquired rival Careem for $3.1 billion. Both companies had announced that they would continue to operate their respective regional services and independent brands.

In October 2022, Uber ceased operations in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad. The company had decided to operate in five cities through Careem and in Lahore through the Uber app.

In an email sent to users in Lahore today, Uber said it had made the “difficult decision to end the provision of Uber app services in Lahore as of April 30.”

“Ride-hailing services will continue to be provided through our subsidiary brand Careem, and you will have the option to sign up and request a trip with Careem for a seamless experience,” the email said.

“With this in mind, Careem Rides may contact you to check in and sign up. If you do not want to share your personal information with Careem, please fill out the form below by May 3, 2024. Please fill in.

“If you currently have an Uber Cash balance in your Uber Wallet, we will contact you shortly regarding the process to get your Uber Cash balance back,” the company said, adding that users will receive 50 points for every five Careem rides. He said a discount of % will also be offered. .

When users in Lahore tried to access the app, they were greeted with a message saying “Uber is no longer in Lahore.” He was also told that with Careem he could get 50% off on 5 rides with code LHR50.
