Rishi Sunak has been criticized after making a bizarre TikTok trend of sharing news of National Insurance cuts.

But what TikTok trend was he trying?

Now, in this latest PR move, the Prime Minister has run a trend on TikTok where users write hidden messages on transparent mugs, which then appear when milk is poured into the drink.

The milk brightens the liquid, revealing the strong coffee that hid the text.

In a video posted on social media, Sunak sits at a table with a cup of coffee and a bottle of milk, pouring the milk into the coffee mug with the words ‘900 pounds’ appearing on it.

“Payday is approaching,” the Prime Minister wrote in the caption on X (formerly Twitter).

“A second round of National Insurance cuts will be applied to payslips tomorrow. Worth £900 for someone earning the UK average salary.”

This is one of various clips Sunak has posted to promote this message, some of which have community notes, and Full Fact reveals what this cut actually means. Did.

“This is only a partial picture. If we include all tax changes to give the full picture, the average worker (on around £35,000) will only save around £340 a year. If it’s less than £6,000, it’s worse.”

Sunak has also been criticized for running a TikTok trend as a way to share this news and not providing full context.

It wasn’t a very good response, but perhaps that’s what the prime minister was aiming for…
