Edeka Group, Germany’s largest grocery retail chain, is deploying AI-powered age verification technology at one of its microlocations at Stuttgart Airport in Stuttgart, Germany, the technology company said Tuesday. It was announced on .

North Canton, Ohio-based Diebold Nixdorf’s Vynamic Smart Vision age verification technology uses AI to estimate the age of customers purchasing items such as alcoholic beverages.

The company, known for its dominance in the ATM market, unveiled the technology at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show convention in January.

The technology also uses computer vision to determine whether a customer failed to scan an item, added an item by mistake without scanning it, or used a fake barcode.

Edeka Group is currently implementing this technology in one 24/7 store owned by Edeka Yeta at Stuttgart Airport.

Diebold said age verification will be required at retail stores about 22% of the time. In his first week of implementation, over 80% of his age-restricted purchases were approved without employee intervention.

“Creating a quick and simple purchasing process for our customers and employees is important to us. This is why our store at Stuttgart Airport is so attractive for busy travelers.” 24/ says Florian Jaeger, co-owner of 7 stores. “Thanks to AI support, we are already able to significantly reduce employee intervention for age verification.”
