AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — It’s a “dangerous” trend that’s gaining momentum across the county and now in Akron. Incidents of what police call “pop-up car hijackings” are on the rise in Akron.

“In recent weeks, a series of pre-planned carjackings have occurred across the city of Akron,” said Lt. Michael Miller of the Akron Police Department.

Law enforcement officials say street and parking lot takeovers are often advertised on social media and attract 25 to 40 vehicles.

If you do this when the lane ends, it’s wrong, experts say

“This activity poses a significant risk to public safety. Participants are driving recklessly, obstructing traffic, and creating dangerous situations that could lead to potential accidents and injuries,” Miller said. Ta.

Mr Miller said three separate carjackings occurred between 8pm and 10pm on Saturday, leading to several arrests and police chases.

“The vehicle, driven by a 16-year-old male, accelerated, ran a red light, and swerved around other vehicles. The driver attempted to evade police by driving down a side street, backing into the parking lot, and ultimately colliding with a pole.” said Miller.

Police say innocent bystanders are being killed in street occupations across the country. Click this link to see recent reports and videos of street occupations in Virginia where crowds swarm police officers.
