More warm weather will continue Wednesday. Winds will pick up Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday afternoon was an even warmer day across New Mexico, with highs 10 degrees warmer than Monday. Roswell reached the mid-90s and Albuquerque reached about 80 degrees. The winds were more widespread this afternoon, but still did not gust over 35 mph. Winds will pick up in western and northern New Mexico Wednesday afternoon, with gusts of about 40 mph possible. A combination of wind, low humidity and warmer temperatures will create a high fire danger for the upper Rio Grande Valley and eastern New Mexico Wednesday afternoon.

A cold front is expected to move through the state Wednesday night, followed by a backdoor cold front Thursday. As a result, temperatures will drop a few degrees into the weekend, but highs will still be near normal and warmer than in early May. Friday morning’s low temperatures are already above the season’s last average of freezing in the western and northern parts of the state, with the possibility of freezing temperatures.

Temperatures will rise again over the weekend with a chance of isolated thunderstorms across eastern New Mexico. Winds will pick up again Sunday and Monday, with gusts of up to 80 mph possible.
