NEW ULM — Rain, thunder and lightning descended on New Ulm Tuesday night, forcing New Ulm High School’s second home track and field meet of the season to be called off after just five total events.
Teams participating in the event with New Ulm were Minnesota Valley Lutheran Church/New Ulm Cathedral, Redwood Valley, Marshall and Tri-City United.
Events completed at the men’s meet were the 100-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles, and 4×800 relay. The girls completed the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, and the girls’ 4×800 relay.
Although the game was incomplete and is not scheduled to continue, New Ulm head coach Andrea Hanson had some time Tuesday night to reflect on how the season is coming together near the halfway point.
“Our kids’ attitude and work ethic has kind of jumped to another level.” she said. “I don’t know if there’s a little bit more competition on the team with more kids on the team, or if they’re just that much more motivated and focused this year to be successful. But I We’ve had a lot of kids step up and work hard at practice, show determination and want to be successful in this sport.”

In the women’s 100-meter dash, Redwood Valley’s Kendall Huenercock won in 13.99 seconds, and New Ulm Eagles’ Riley Wilson took second in 14.03 seconds. In the women’s 100, New Ulm’s Leah Brustad (14.09) placed third, with MVL/NUC’s Avery Friar (14.2) and Tiffany Dos Santos placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Ta.
MVL/NUC dominated the women’s 100m hurdles, with three finishers in the top five. Emily Brown won in 17.97 seconds, Avery Friar was second in 18.27 seconds, and Claudia Weisenzel was fourth in 18.76 seconds. New Ulm’s top athlete in the women’s 100 hurdles was Kyra Colden, who placed eighth in 21.04 seconds.
In addition to her strong performance in the women’s 100 meters, Brustad won the women’s high jump with a top jump of 4 feet, 6 inches.
In the women’s 4×800 relay, the Redwood Valley team of Laura Ruze, Madalyn Mansell, Addie Tomes and Ellie Nelson won in 10 minutes, 16.79 seconds. Marshall’s team of Sidney Town, Oakley Schneekloth, Landry Graven and Avery Schneekloth finished second (10:28.47), followed by New Ulm’s team of Skoglund, Colden, Grace Barry and Megan Goert. The team placed 3rd out of 6 teams (11 minutes 12.94 seconds).
In the men’s 100 meters, MVL/NUC’s Josh Bentler won in 11.89 seconds, with teammate Jayden Helget fourth in 12.15 seconds. Cole Frederick of New Ulm was sixth in 12.41 seconds.

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, MVL/NUC’s Will Kaserman placed second (16.22) behind Redwood Valley’s Blake Stevens (15.84), and Marshall’s Aidan Schuurman took third (17.24). became. New Ulm’s Ethan Reeve placed 10th with a score of 21.38.
In the men’s 4×800 relay, Redwood Valley’s team of Kiren Chirek, Landin Nordby, William Ahrens and Mason Anderson won (8:29.83), while Jacob of New Ulm’s men’s 4×800 relay -The team of Geis, Joshua Gordon, Nichols Tulbes and Michael won. Hames took second place (9:36.76).
Hanson said that while the team’s standouts are still outstanding at this point in the season, he is once again pleased with the depth this year and what he has brought to the team.
“We have added a lot of reinforcements to the team, which makes us more balanced.” she said. “In past years, you might have had one finisher in each event to earn points, but now you may have multiple finishers, which better prepares you for success. It’s going to set things up and push the relay to a slightly different level.
“We’re still working out the timing of the handoff, but when the timing is right, it looks really good because we have depth this year, so it was fun to see that.”
Hanson also said he noticed the seniors setting personal records early in the season and was excited to see them.
Once again waiting for the weather to break, the Eagles have a game scheduled for Thursday at Mankato East High School before the Section 2AA True Team track and field meet in Jordan on Tuesday.
