Depending on who you ask, is the mesh flat shoe trend a genius way to show off a pedicure or a toe-forward style you should avoid at all costs? If I had the chance to vote for Jennifer Lawrence, she would be in the first group, along with other fashion editors and myself.
On Thursday, May 2, when temperatures soared to nearly 80 degrees on the first full day of spring in New York City, Lawrence pulled out her favorite Alaia mesh ballet flats and paired them with another rich mom outfit. It’s no exaggeration to say it’s my favorite. She wore this pair several times this year and in 2023.

The rest of Lawrence’s outfit tapped into 2024 color trends and the rising It bag, incorporating a few wardrobe staples. (I wonder if the actress’s stylist, Jamie Mizrahi, taught her a class on how to wear effortless high-low styles. If so, where can I sign up?) What’s more, she He casually layered a butter yellow Jil Sander jacket over a plain white T-shirt. Below, she wore paddle jeans secured with a belt by Celine. She pulled her entire look together with a Bottega Veneta bag draped over one arm.

Over the past two years, brands from all price points and perspectives have released versions of mesh ballet flats, but Lawrence’s pair is the trend-setter. Alaïa’s Fishnet Mary Jane first launched in 2021 and quickly took over street style. Two years later, Lyst ranked the shoe on his 2023 Most Popular Products Index.of wall street journal Just a few weeks ago, we did an entire feature on how difficult it is to find Alaia apartment inventory. Lawrence had it on from the beginning, and she was clearly on to something. The actress’s other brand, Zarow, also makes her black mesh flats, which are loved by her fashion editors.

Lawrence’s way of styling mesh flats is what makes this trend so appealing. The shoes are staring me in the face, but her casual jacket, jeans, and skirt dampen that vibe. Something tells me this won’t be the last time she wears it. By the next time I witness it, I’ll be wearing my shoes. Her commitment to toe-on-display style is that much more persuasive.
