An official investigation found evidence of foreign interference in Canada’s last two federal elections, but the outcome of the vote was not affected and the electoral system was robust, according to initial findings released Friday.
The interim report’s findings support Trudeau’s assertion that China tried to interfere in the election but had no effect on the outcome. The committee is expected to release its final report by the end of this year. The Chinese government has repeatedly denied any intervention.
Commissioner Marie-Josée Hoag, who is leading the independent public inquiry, said: “There was certainly some foreign interference during the past two federal elections, but it did not undermine the integrity of the electoral system.” .
