Pakistan wheat fraud investigation: government’s evasive response raises concerns, reports say

LAHORE: The Pakistan government’s response to the wheat scam investigation has been evasive, Dawn reported, despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s promise to protect farmers’ interests.

Although he has promised unwavering support for farmers, it is clear that the federal government is unwilling to thoroughly investigate the alleged fraud and hold those responsible accountable.

The fact-finding committee tasked with uncovering irregularities in wheat imports is chaired by Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal. However, the report points out that there appear to be elements within the government that are hesitant to tackle the investigation in earnest.

PML-N officials have made it clear that Nawaz Sharif insists on taking decisive action against the perpetrators, regardless of their political influence. However, Dorn said that despite his suggestions, the current government clearly lacks enthusiasm in involving agencies such as NAB and FIA in the investigation.

Expanding

Information Minister Ataullah Tarar’s dismissal of involvement with NAB and FIA has raised eyebrows, especially considering the scale of the alleged fraud of over 500 million Pakistani rupees, and their involvement is justified as per the new law. The government’s cautious approach, attributed to the former caretaker government’s involvement, reflects its reluctance to tread on controversial ground.

Adding depth to the controversy, the report said, reports suggesting that there were large imports of wheat under the post-election government of Shehbaz Sharif. Denials by government officials contradict the claims, further complicating the situation. Responsibility for the wheat crisis will be shifted to the interim government, and responsibility for the current government will be distanced.

Reports about the summoning of former administration officials by the fact-finding committee have added to the confusion, but the committee’s chairman, Kamran Ali Afzal, was quick to deny it.

Tensions continue to rise within the PML-N, with Hanif Abbasi at odds with former interim prime minister Anwarul Haq Kakar over the wheat scandal. Kakar’s veiled threats hint at underlying political maneuvering and add intrigue to the unfolding drama. The PTI seized the opportunity to take advantage of the discord within the opposition camp to push for the establishment of a judicial commission.

Amid the turmoil, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought to reassure farmers by expressing his unwavering support.

His decision to set up a committee to address farmers’ grievances shows a proactive stance aimed at alleviating wheat procurement concerns, Dawn reported.
