RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Millions of dollars are now available to North Carolina farmers and other small business owners in the agriculture industry.

The state Department of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture is providing a total of $6.2 million to small agricultural businesses, with grants ranging from $10,000 up to $2 million.

State Department of Agriculture Commissioner Beth Farrell said the funding will help build equipment and infrastructure with the goal of expanding food supply and reach for producers.

“It is our hope that this will get more North Carolina food into multiple distribution channels, including restaurants, grocery stores and other locations like food hubs,” Farrell said. .

Darius and Shameeka McCoy own the 12:03 a.m. farm in Sampson County. They have owned the farm for about two years and grow fruits, vegetables and herbs.

The McCoys told CBS 17 they are applying for grants in hopes of producing more food and one day opening a farmers market to bring fresh food to the community.

“We don’t have much to start with, so having the opportunity to apply for these grants is very beneficial for us,” Darius said.

Applications for the grant are open until June 15th. Click here for more information. Click here for eligibility requirements.
