An unprecedented number of technology and finance students are graduating without finding a job.

In my many years of experience as a career counselor, something new is now happening. An unprecedented number of technology and finance students are graduating without finding a job.that would have been unprecedented. College graduates of 2023 are still unemployed, and many of the tech students of 2024 are not employed.

David was the parent who called to try to help his son. He expressed his dissatisfaction by saying: “My son just graduated with a degree in computer science. He wants to be a software engineer. That was supposed to be a high-demand field. So why did my son go to college without a job?” He added that he was surprised by the situation and asked, “What can I do to get him hired?”

Not having a job on graduation day is a common occurrence for students majoring in marketing, communications, and psychology. The big surprise is the number of scientists, analysts in computer science, engineers, finance and data he will be unemployed in 2023 and he will be unemployed in 2024.. All of these things add up to make the search difficult. One big reason is that many of the technology companies that typically employ these workers are downsizing, stopping or significantly reducing hiring. As a result, fewer jobs are available and more people are seeking them.

These are great employment strategies that will help you find a good job.

resume

College students are likely to have never created a resume before, so they often write poorly. Most people don’t make the most of their defining internship experience. I think they can acquire more knowledge and skills. Your resume should be targeted and based on what the employer wants. Check out the job descriptions for several roles to determine what’s essential. Search for the job you’re looking for, such as web developer. Check the top qualifications and look for her 3-4 typical duties in several job descriptions. Then incorporate some of that into your resume to more closely match what employers are looking for in applicants.

LinkedIn – This is a valuable network that most students overlook. A completed profile with the “Open to Work” section and tags turned on is required. Headlines are the most searched part of LinkedIn, so you want to make sure your potential job title is covered. The heading will appear below your name. Note that you must use a slash between these titles and the experience tagline for algorithmic searches to be effective.

An example is shown below.

Computer Science l Data Scientist l Fresh Graduate l Data Analyst l 1 year experience

Another common mistake on LinkedIn is that alumni often need more connections. Many are less than 20. Please change it immediately. Add people you know, such as friends, relatives, or friends of your parents. Connect directly with recruiters by implementing this powerful technique described in this article from Forbes.

Under interview – This is another area where technical graduates are unable to explain their skills and provide inadequate answers to employers’ questions. Situational questions that require you to provide specific work examples will leave you blank as you try to think of an answer. Most people lack insight on how to market themselves effectively. They are unable to point to significant academic projects, knowledge and skills that they have developed independently or at university. Many of our graduates either learned programming before entering university or were self-taught. Some took courses that helped them learn languages like Python and JavaScript. These are things that need to be emphasized. This next step is an important one. Write down answers to potential questions in advance. Please check them. No need to memorize. Get used to that answer. Practice your answers by role-playing. Make sure you have covered all frequently asked questions, such as: what is your biggest weaknessor Please tell us about yourself. Get feedback to revise or improve your answer. Also, practice your online presence to become more confident.

This Forbes article will help graduates improve their interviewing skills and provide better answers to employers.

Please narrow your search. Applying online using Builtin.com, Indeed, or LinkedIn shouldn’t be your only job search strategy. Expand your search beyond technology companies. Also think about employers outside of the technology industry who want to hire technical talent. More opportunities currently exist in financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and education. Do your research and choose 20 companies you would like to work for. Visit the website to find relevant job openings and apply directly to the employer’s website. You may find more opportunities there that you won’t find elsewhere. When applying, make sure your skills and years of experience match what the employer is looking for in a candidate for that entry-level job. Be selective. Apply only when appropriate to avoid unnecessary rejections.

Note that you only need to get one job.
