IndyStar sports columnist Greg Doyle “does not cover the Indiana Fever,” an IndyStar spokesperson told CNN in a statement Tuesday.
In April, Doyle had a cringe-worthy exchange during Caitlin Clark’s inauguration press conference as the new member of the WNBA team.
An IndyStar writer had Clark make a heart with his hands, a gesture Clark often used during his career as a college basketball player.
Clark replied, “Do you like it?” Doyle responded, “I’m glad you’re here,” to which Clark explained, “Yeah, that’s what we do as a family after every game.” Doyle then added, “If you start doing that to me, we’ll get along just fine.”
Later that day, Doyle apologized in a post on X, saying, “My subsequent comments were clumsy and awkward.” I sincerely apologize. ” he added In another post about X: “Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry. Today I was part of the problem,” was the title of his apology column published in the IndyStar last month.
IndyStar’s parent company, Gannett, did not respond to a CNN inquiry about whether Doyle would cover the team during the season.
CNN has reached out to Doyle for comment.
Doyle’s last article was published on April 29th about the Indianapolis Colts NFL Draft.
Clark and the Fever will begin their 25th regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Connecticut Sun.
