The City of San Diego is celebrating May 2024 as Small Business Month.

According to the City of San Diego, there are 4.1 million “small businesses” in California, and 93% of businesses in San Diego have 12 or fewer employees.

On the 1st of this month, Governor Gavin Newsom declared May 2024 as “Small Business Month” in the state.

The city provides thousands of dollars to small businesses through various programs. These include the Small Business and Restaurant Program, the Development Grant Program, and the Point of Sale Improvement Program.

Lab A Salon in North Park, which offers a myriad of hair care services, is one salon that could benefit from this program.

Adrianne Tolentino, owner of The Lab a Salon, said, “The grants and funding from the city is very helpful.”

Business owners can receive up to $8,000 to develop and implement a plan to improve their street-facing facade as part of the Storefront Improvement Program.

In fiscal year 2023, the city provided $84,560 in incentives through the program, according to the city of San Diego.

“We repainted the entire building. We created this cover. We redid the covered patio space,” the Olympic Cafe co-owner told NBC 7 in December 2022 after benefiting from a storefront improvement program. told.

According to the City of San Diego, the Capacity Building Grant Program supports the growth of nonprofit organizations that directly support small businesses in under-resourced communities.
