Pakistan has a deep love for sports. Cricket, a national concern, unites the country like nothing else. Hockey, squash and other sports produce world-class athletes who fly their flags high on the international stage. However, this passion has not completely translated into financial success to date.

The world is beginning to realize the power of sport. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the global sports market is expected to grow to US$707 billion by 2026. This presents a great opportunity for countries such as Pakistan to capitalize on the growing demand for sports apparel, equipment, broadcasting, and related services.

Head start in sporting goods manufacturing

Pakistan is already a manufacturing powerhouse for sports equipment, especially soccer. The sector generates more than US$1 billion every year and Sialkot serves as a global football production hub. According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Pakistan exported soccer balls worth between $350 million and $500 million in 2022-2023. This knowledge can be used to expand production to other sports equipment such as cricket bats, hockey sticks, and athletic equipment, thereby catering to a thriving global sports market.

Empowering youth through sports

Pakistan has a young and vibrant population, with more than 64% of people between the ages of 18 and 35. This is a demographic bonus that can be achieved through sports. According to UNESCO’s assessment, investing in youth participation in sport improves employment opportunities by: 13%. Pakistan can invest in infrastructure, training programs and grassroots activities. A high-quality academy with modern equipment allows us to teach players not only skills, but also nutrition, fitness and mental conditioning. This holistic approach creates a pipeline of world-class talent that can compete on a global scale. Coaches, trainers, sports scientists, physical therapists and event organizers are all needed in a healthy sports industry. This increases the employment possibilities of educated young people and contributes positively to the national economy. Increased participation in sports improves the health and fitness of the population, reduces health care costs, and increases overall national productivity.

Building a strong domestic sports industry

A strong domestic sports sector is the foundation for long-term success. This is what Pakistan needs. According to a report by Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), there is a severe lack of modern sports facilities in the country. Upgrade existing stadiums and build new sports complexes and training centers to provide venues for events, attract sponsors and increase participation in sports. Cricket, hockey, and other popular sports require well-organized professional leagues. The success of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in cricket demonstrates its potential. Such leagues not only attract investment, but also generate cash from broadcast rights fees and item sales, and serve as a platform for the growth and development of emerging talent.

Harnessing the power of sports tourism

Sports tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry. Pakistan’s diverse landscape and rich sporting heritage have immense potential to attract international tourists.

Hosting international events – Bidding for and hosting major international tournaments such as the Cricket World Cup and the Asian Games will focus on Pakistan’s sports infrastructure and hospitality. These events can generate significant revenue through ticket sales, tourism, and sponsorship. For example, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa increased the country’s GDP by an estimated US$1.6 billion.

Adventure sports – Pakistan is home to some of the most beautiful mountain ranges, rivers and deserts in the world. The development of adventure sports, such as mountaineering, whitewater rafting, and skiing, may appeal to specific groups of tourists seeking unique and thrilling experiences.

Cultural experience – Integrating sporting events with cultural activities such as traditional food and music festivals creates a unique and attractive tourism package. This will not only attract tourists but also promote Pakistani culture on a global scale.

Building a strong sports brand

Pakistan needs a strong brand identity to enter the global sports market.
Highlighting the achievements of Pakistani athletes such as national cricket legends Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, squash great Jansher Khan and hockey legend Shahbaz Ahmed is a great way to promote Pakistan on a global scale. It will not only portray a positive image of Japan, but also encourage young people. Promoting fair play and sportsmanship will enhance Pakistan’s image as a reputed sporting nation. This requires not only activities that promote sportsmanship and ethical behavior, but also strict anti-doping policies. Utilizing technology like e-commerce and social media to promote your international sporting goods, clothing, and experiences can help you reach a wider audience. Partnering with international sports brands and leveraging social media influencers could help Pakistan expand its influence.

Challenges and the way forward

Leveraging sport for economic development requires addressing certain challenges, including:
Security concerns: To attract international athletes, teams and tourists, Pakistan needs to strengthen its image of security. Investing in security and creating a comfortable work environment are important.

Infrastructure development: by pied Research shows that upgrading existing sports infrastructure and developing new facilities requires significant investment. Public-private cooperation and new fiscal approaches can help close the fiscal gap.

Private sector investment: Encouraging private sector participation through lower taxes, simpler rules, and a stable business environment is essential for long-term growth. Governments can help create an environment that fosters private investment in sports infrastructure, team sponsorship and broadcast rights.

Corruption and governance: Combating corruption and establishing transparency in sports administration remain important to attract investment and build trust. Government institutions need to be strengthened and effective anti-corruption measures taken.

Pakistan has the potential to become a big player in the global sports business. Its great sporting heritage, passionate fan base and talented staff provide solid evidence of this. Pakistan can use sport to create jobs, increase exports and improve its global image by investing in infrastructure, developing human resources, building a strong brand identity and addressing important issues. can. This will require a collaborative effort from governments, the commercial sector, sports organizations and civil society. With a clear strategy, competent implementation, and commitment to good government, Pakistan will turn its sporting passion into long-term economic prosperity, inspire its youth, and establish its name on the global sporting map. can.
