SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Mother’s Day rush is in full bloom at greenhouses across Keloland. In fact, Lewis Drug is calling it the Black Friday of Spring.

Kristin Brandner of Sioux Falls doesn’t need to give her family any hints about what she wants for Mother’s Day. She just goes out and buys herself flowers.

“It’s a tradition in my house that my sons come and help me plant what I choose. That’s part of my Mother’s Day gift to them and it’s a really nice tradition, so today I’m going to It was my choice,” Brandner said.

Mother’s Day is a treasure trove for local greenhouses.

“This is the busiest weekend for garden stores,” said Kim Westall, merchandiser at Lewis Garden Store.

Stephanie Fisher of Sioux Falls buys flowers for her mother and herself.

“I like very bright colors. I think geraniums and other plants in large pots with reds, oranges, and pinks look very pretty,” Fisher said.

Lewis said she receives regular shipments of flowers and should have a good selection for the weekend. Still, it’s never a good idea to shop last minute, especially on Mother’s Day.

“We’ll come get it while it’s still available. Because we might be out of a certain flower that you want, and we might have it now, or we might have it next week,” he said. Because some of the people who are receiving flowers may not even have a single flower,” Westall said.

Rows of colorful flowers are enough to inspire customers to stock up for the holiday season. For many families, it wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without fresh flowers in the house.

“And they last a long time. The cards are nice, too, but the flowers continue to bloom all year round,” Brandner said.

Preparing for Mother’s Day takes time. Lewis began hiring seasonal staff at the garden center in January.
