Members of the Air Force Medical Service’s Nursing Corps visited the National Museum of Health and Medicine on May 8, 2024, to celebrate Nurses and Medical Technicians Week.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine preserves the influence of military medicine by archiving and displaying artifacts from every major armed conflict in the United States. During their visit, AFMS guests toured the museum and learned more about nurses’ influence on early military medicine.

The staff began the tour by detailing the history of the museum, starting with its founding in 1862 during the Civil War.

Guides led the nurses through the museum and spoke with several collection managers, highlighting archived exhibits such as the uniform cap worn by Col. Verena Zeller, the first commander of the Air Force Nurse Corps. . Zeller was commissioned as a general duty nurse in the Army Medical Service Nursing Corps in 1936, transferred to the Air Force in 1949, and led Air Force nursing from its inception.

The tour was held in conjunction with Nurses and Medical Technicians Week, which celebrates the significant contributions and impact of nurses and medical technicians to AFMS and military health care.

“Nurses and Medical Technicians Week is the one week of the year where we really get to showcase what we bring to the fight,” said Col. Gwendolyn Foster, Chief of the Nursing Corps and AFMS Chief of Staff. “We do this every day. It’s selfless. You can ask questions of nurses and medical technicians. [about these sacrifices]And they’ll say, “I was just doing my job.” But because our work touches so many lives, this is the only time we can truly express our gratitude to nurses and medical technicians. That’s what this week has meant to me, and that’s why I think it’s so important to take the time to thank them for what they do. ”
