In a thrilling encounter on Friday, Ireland achieved an impressive five-wicket victory against Pakistan in the first T20I in Dublin. This remarkable victory marked Ireland’s first T20 win against Pakistan. This victory also set the stage for an exciting showdown in just a month’s time, with both sides set to meet in the T20 World Cup.
Facing a formidable target of 183, Ireland batted superbly as they chased Pakistan’s total with plenty of balls to spare. Opening pitcher Andy Balbirnie led the attack with an overwhelming 77 out of 55 pitches, laying a solid foundation for Ireland’s pursuit of victory. Buoyed by Harry Tector’s gritty 36 points, Balbirnie easily pushed Ireland past the 100-run mark.
With Balbirnie dismissed in the 19th over, the equation becomes 16 runs needed from just eight balls. However, Curtis Camphor emerged as the hero of the occasion, scoring 15 points from seven balls to seal Pakistan’s historic victory and shock Babar Azam’s side.
Watch the moment of victory:
Ireland’s victory was determined by an impressive bowling effort and fielding performance earlier in the day. The home side displayed their ability with the ball and restricted Pakistan to 182-6 despite great contributions from Babar Azam and Saim Ayub.
Fast bowler Craig Young was outstanding, taking vital wickets of Babar (57) and Azam Khan (0) to derail Pakistan’s momentum in the middle overs. Ireland excelled in all areas of the game, backed by flawless fielding, including two decisive run-outs and an exceptional catch from deep.
Ireland lead 1-0
The win gave Ireland a 1-0 lead in their third consecutive match against Babar Azam’s side. This is Ireland’s first T20I win against Pakistan, but only their second win overall across all formats. Their first win against Pakistan was back in 2007, when they produced a stunning upset in the ODI World Cup and ensured the team’s exit from the group stage.
Pakistan are also in the same position as Ireland in the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The group also includes arch-rivals India, the United States and Canada. India will face Babar Azam’s team on June 8 in New York.
