SUV rolls down hill, through playground, Cohasset Police say

Cohasset police said three people, including two children, were injured when an out-of-control sport utility vehicle crossed a playground where children were playing in a Massachusetts town. Police Chief William Quigley said that around 10:40 a.m. Saturday, the department received numerous 911 calls regarding a vehicle driving through the front playground of Cohasset Middle/High School on Pond Street. Responding officers learned that a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban SUV had rolled out of a parking space and down a steep slope. to the soccer field where kindergarteners were playing lacrosse at the time, Quigley said. Coaches and parents said they were able to quickly move children out of the car’s path because there was no driver in the car. The SUV struck a lacrosse coach as it drove through the field, crashed through a chain-link fence and across Pond Street, eventually coming to a stop in a nearby yard, the police chief said. 150 Pound St. Cohasset Fire Department paramedics treated his two young children who were in the SUV and the coach that was hit by the vehicle at the scene. Quigley said the children and coach suffered minor injuries and no one was taken to the hospital in connection with the incident. “Thanks to the quick actions of Coach and his bystanders, we avoided a major tragedy today,” Quigley said in a statement. Quigley said no charges have been filed at this time, but the incident is still under investigation.

Police Chief William Quigley said the department received numerous reports of a vehicle driving across the playground in front of Cohasset Middle and High School on Pond Street around 10:40 a.m. Saturday.

Quigley said responding officers discovered the SUV, a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban, rolled out of the parking lot, down a steep hill and onto a soccer field where kindergarteners were playing lacrosse at the time. He said he learned about it.

Quigley said there was no driver in the vehicle, but there were two young children in the car seats, so coaches and parents were able to quickly move the children out of the path. That’s what it means.

The SUV struck a lacrosse coach as it drove through the field, crashed through a chain-link fence and crossed Pond Street, eventually coming to rest in a yard near 150 Pond Street, the police chief said.

Cohasset Fire Department paramedics treated two young children at the scene who were in the SUV and the bus that was struck by the vehicle. Quigley said the children and coach suffered minor injuries, but no one was taken to the hospital in connection with the incident.

“Thanks to the quick actions of our coaches and bystanders, today’s major tragedy was avoided,” Quigley said in a statement.

Quigley said no charges have been filed at this time, but the incident is still under investigation.
