Texas Tech University track and field competed Friday in the second day of the Big 12 Outdoor Championships at Baylor University in Waco.

Weather was a factor on the second day as inclement weather caused a delay of approximately 7 hours between events. In addition, the qualifying round, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, was rescheduled for the timed finals on Saturday.

Freshman Trey Wilson placed fourth in the boys shot put with a personal best of 19.36 meters. According to Tech Athletics, Wilson’s pitch was the sixth-best pitch in Tech history and led to five points for the Red Raiders.

Before the postponement of the women’s javelin competition due to weather, freshman teammates Kyriece Hollands and Leah Howard earned the Red Raiders’ fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Holland threw 50.39 meters and Howard threw 50.10 meters. Both of these were career-best pitches that earned Tech seven points, according to Tech Athletics.

In the women’s long jump, freshman Grace Oshiokpu jumped 5.91 meters to place ninth, narrowly missing out on points for the Red Raiders. Graduate student Ann Susannah Foster-Catta placed 11th with a jump of 5.85 meters. Sophomore Ayanna Jones placed 17th with a jump of 5.73 meters.

Senior Field Gatlin placed 11th in the women’s shot put with a throw of 15.01 meters. Sophomore Faith Mitchell, senior Zoe Burleson and sophomore Mackenzie Davis took 14th through 16th place, respectively. Mitchell threw 14.79 meters, Burleson 14.68 meters and Davis 14.66 meters.

In the men’s long jump, freshman Zaid Latif placed 10th with a jump of 7.29 meters. Senior Stacey Brown Jr. was three spots behind Latif, who placed 13th with a jump of 7.18 meters.

Tech enters the third day in ninth place with both teams having 13 points each.

Tech University will conclude the Big 12 Outdoor Championships starting Saturday with the women’s pole vault event at 11 a.m.
