Game notes: Reese Olson is much better than his record indicates. Not any better, not much better, just a lot better than his 0-4 record.
Entering Tuesday, Olson had started seven games this year, allowing one earned run or less in five of those games. He has improved his ERA in every start since his second start of the year, when he allowed six earned runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
When Olson left his final start on May 8 against the Cleveland Guardians, it looked like he might finally get his first win. Thanks to four runs in the fourth inning, the Tigers went up 4-2 before he finished the game after the sixth inning. The Guardians scored two goals, but only one of them came from Olson. He did his job again. The Tigers’ bullpen then gave up one run each in the 8th, 9th, and 10th innings, and the Tigers again lost the game in which Olson started.
Somehow, despite a 2.52 ERA, the Tigers are just 1-6 in games Olson has pitched this season, with the Tigers’ only win coming in a late comeback and defeating the New York Mets. He became the first starter that year.
The good news for Olson is that the baseball-watching public doesn’t care as much about wins and losses as it used to (thank you, Moneyball). Other than the numbers in the win-loss column, Olson’s stats look very good, especially when you take that into account. First full season in the major leagues.

Tuesday’s opponent, the Miami Marlins, will give Olson about as good of a chance to win. The Marlins have the fewest wins in baseball, and when they sent Luis Arraez (who, like his win-loss stats, is a relic of another era) to the San Diego Padres to acquire a promising player, he had already given up the white flag. It looked like it had been shaken.
The timing for the Tigers against the Marlins couldn’t have come at a better time (for both the team and Olson) after a tough stretch in which they lost each of their last three series.
Both teams will conclude their series on Wednesday, then the Tigers will have an off day on Thursday before heading to Arizona for a new series against the Diamondbacks, who represented the National League in last year’s World Series.
