State officials visited the site of the Polling geothermal project in Bavaria, Germany, to express support for the ongoing drilling operations.
State officials visited the site of a geothermal project being developed by Erdwerme Inn GmbH & Co. in Polling, Bavaria, Germany. Drilling is currently underway on site using a rig manufactured by Herrenknecht Vertical GmbH.
The Pawling geothermal project, with a planned thermal capacity of 30 MW, is envisioned to supply hot water for heating two greenhouses in the nearby communities of Reichenspurner Hof and Pawling. A portion of the energy will also be supplied to the planned district heating networks in Mühldorf am Inn and Tüssling.
Geothermal heat is the key to thermal transition
Demonstrating the growing political interest in geothermal energy, Dr. Florian Hellmann, Head of the Bavaria State Chancellery and Deputy Minister for Federal Affairs and Media, and Dr. Florian Stegmann, Minister of State and Head of the Chancellery of Baden-Württemberg, visited the region. did. Poring geothermal project site.
During their visit, both politicians highlighted the important role geothermal can play in providing a safe and sustainable energy supply. “The possibilities are far from exhausted. In the long term, domestic geothermal energy could make a significant contribution to the success of the thermal transition.” Dr. Stegman said.
“Sustainable energy supply is essential as a business location in Bavaria. The Pauling project is a showcase project for the excellent cooperation between local actors.” added Dr. Florian Herrmann. “Deep geothermal energy is truly ‘household energy’ and its expansion is therefore particularly important for Bavaria’s heating transition.”

high tech drilling
Two boreholes up to a depth of 4000 meters are being drilled at the Poling geothermal project. Drilling is being carried out by the Innova Rig (TI418) manufactured by Herrenknecht Vertical GmbH and developed in collaboration with drilling companies H. Anger’s Söhne and GFZ Potsdam. TI-418 has been used since 2007, mainly in Germany, but also in various European projects aimed at energy transition in Sweden, Finland and the United Kingdom.
“The rig has a hook load of 418 tonnes, can switch between different drilling methods, requires little space and is quiet.” Ulrich Hahne, Director of Herrenknecht Vertical GmbH, with almost 20 years of experience in the field of deep geothermal energy, explains:
“Hereknecht Vertical’s high degree of automation and sophisticated safety concept make Innova Rig the perfect choice for deep geothermal energy projects.” This was confirmed by Daniel Schindler, executive director of deep drilling company Anger’s Söhne.
