HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WNCN) — When you think of pageants, you may think of traditional contestants who have years of training.
But this year’s Miss Wake County USA winner, Erica Laws, is unlike anyone before her.
“I’m a total novice at this. I’m just learning how to walk in heels,” Laws said.
The 41-year-old Holly Springs mother of two is breaking barriers as the Miss Universe organization allows women over 28 to compete in the contest for the first time ever.

“I brought in a different type of person,” she explained. “She’s a middle-aged woman who has raised a family and has limitations, but somehow manages to overcome them.”
Laws is celebrating her journey of losing more than 100 pounds with her husband, a Purple Heart Army veteran.
“She inspired me to get back into fitness and get healthy again, and it was truly awe-inspiring to watch,” said Erica’s husband, Robert Laws. . “This is a testament to all the hard work she has put in.”
Lowes began sharing her weight loss journey on TikTok in July and has amassed more than 22,300 followers.
“I want to show other moms that you can do this, even if you have issues like weight,” she said.
Through her platform, Laws also hopes to spread awareness after being diagnosed with autism.

“People with these conditions are capable of much more than people realize,” she says.
Laws will compete in the Miss North Carolina USA pageant to be held in Charleston on June 14th and 15th.
She gave an important message as we prepare for the tournament.
“I want to stand on that stage and show that no matter what you look like, how much you weigh, whether you have kids or not, no matter how old you are, if you practice hard, you can stand up.” Compete on that stage and give it a real shot. Please,” she said.
