Gary Kirsten will join the England team on May 19th, beginning a two-year stint as coach of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team.
Pakistan will face England in a four-team Twenty20 squad as they prepare for the T20 World Cup to be held in the Caribbean and the United States next month.
Pakistan have postponed naming their final 15 squad for the T20 World Cup until next Tuesday’s first T20 match against England in Leeds.
Kirsten was a mentor and batting coach for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. They were eliminated from playoff contention on Monday.
“I have missed the experience of coaching at international level and developing talented players to reach their full potential,” Kirsten said in a statement released by the Pakistan Cricket Board on Tuesday. “I am fully committed to working closely with the (Pakistan) team to improve their game and bring joy to fans around the world.” Kirsten has previously coached India and South Africa .
Last month, it was announced that the 56-year-old South African would be the white ball coach and Jason Gillespie would be the red ball coach.
Pakistan have performed well in the last two T20 World Cups. They reached the semi-finals in 2021 and the final against England in 2022.
The PCB has also appointed Simon Helmott as the national team’s defensive coach and David Reid as the mental performance coach for the T20 World Cup. Reid will join the squad next Monday, while Helmot will team up with the Pakistan side on May 31 after the T20 series against England.
