On the first day of racing at the USA Cycle Pro Road National Championship, Ashlyn Barry (EF Education-ONTO) took the Junior Men’s 17-18 crown and Lydia Cusack (DCdevo Racing Academy) took the Junior Women’s 17-18 time. Won the trial title.
Barry, who lives in Canada but holds a U.S. bicycle license and competes in dual nationality races, completed the course in 20 minutes and 39 seconds, earning him his first U.S. national victory. David Lapierre (Hot Tubes Development) rode two spots behind Barry, taking the silver medal with a time of 20:42, just under three seconds behind.
Noah Streif beat Joaquín Medina Gerson (Hot Tubes Development) by four-hundredths of a second, giving the two EF Education-ONTO riders a podium spot and taking the bronze medal.
Barry’s teammate William “Gray” Barnett, last year’s junior boys 15-16 national champion, was the last rider on the course, stopping the clock at 20 minutes, 55 seconds. This was a good result, placing him 7th out of 44 riders in the field on the 10.5 course. Mile (16.9km) course.
Cusack, a two-time winner of the 2022 U.S. Women’s Junior 15-16 Road Championship, was the first rider off the start ramp Tuesday for a single loop around downtown Charleston, West Virginia. Her record of 22 minutes and 55 seconds was never threatened and she progressed from the hot seat to the top step of the podium to win her gold medal.
DCdevo teammate Alyssa White (from West Virginia) won the silver medal with a time of 31 minutes and 38 seconds, and Helena Jones of TWENTY24 Aevolo took the bronze medal with a further 11 minutes and 13 seconds. Jorja Bond (Boulder Junior Cycling) was the only rider to finish within a minute of Cusack, finishing fourth with a difference of 55:06.
The junior race kicked off a six-day race from Charleston, West Virginia. A mountain town on the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States has been selected as the new location for the US Pro Road Nationals from 2024 to 2028.
All courses for time trial, criterium, and road race events are based in downtown Charleston, with start and finish lines located at Haddad Riverfront Park adjacent to the Kanawha River. Across his three disciplines at the Road, his 18 Stars and Stripes jerseys will be awarded to men and women in the junior 17-18, under-23 and elite divisions. This is the first time USA Cycling will host a road event for junior 17-18 year olds and all U23 riders at the same venue and on the same dates as the elite.
