DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy and may make up 99.9% of all businesses.
But data suggests it may take multiple failures before success.
Small Business Month aims to celebrate the tenacity and courage of these business owners. May highlights the hard work it takes to succeed and how these businesses enrich their communities.
One West Alexandria couple is proof that their dreams are growing by the day.
“When the spotlight shines on us, we feel a little bit of a sense of accomplishment as a tiny little business,” said Stacey Miracle, who runs Tiny Miracles Party Rentals with her husband Joe.
Their hire service will help you liven up your party both indoors and outdoors, offering soft play setups such as bubble machines for children under 5.
However, with inflation still at a high level, this is a difficult period to overcome.
“This increased our costs by probably 15 to 25 percent overall,” Staci said. “Shipping has been the hardest kind of pill for us to swallow.
“We ordered a larger set, so it should arrive within the next month or two. Last year’s price was probably $500 less than what we paid this year.”
The obstacle taught them both valuable lessons. Staci’s tips include:

“Before you start your business, you want to have specific policies and contracts in place to avoid getting into legal trouble,” Stacey says.
Joe added that potential business owners need to be passionate about what they’re working on.
Despite the challenges of being a small business owner, Joe said the true miracle is seeing the light in children’s eyes.
“She’s almost six years old, and when we talk about what she wants to be when she grows up, she always talks about running a business,” Joe said. “It’s a great feeling knowing that she can create something for the kids. It’s very, very rewarding.”
