A security guard trainee at an Amazon warehouse in Ohio was shot and killed by police after he tried to shoot his boss, then later shot and killed a police officer who was saved by a bulletproof vest, authorities said.
A security guard trainee at an Amazon warehouse in Ohio was shot and killed by a police officer after he tried to shoot his boss at point-blank range, authorities said, and a police officer who was later rescued wearing a bulletproof vest was shot and killed.
The first shooting occurred at a warehouse in West Jefferson around 4:40 p.m. Sunday and was captured on surveillance footage, police said at a news conference Monday.
Police said Ali Hamsa Yusuf, 22, approached the supervisor from behind and pointed a gun at the supervisor’s head, but the gun appeared to be malfunctioning and the bullet barely hit the supervisor. There were no injuries. Officials said more than 100 employees were in the building at the time of the shooting.
Yusuf quickly fled the building, but was found by Madison County authorities in Columbus late Sunday. Franklin Township and Columbus police immediately tried to stop his car, but Yusuf got out of his car and began firing at Columbus police officers. Authorities said the officer was struck by bullets, but his injuries were not serious because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Yusuf then tried to run away as other police officers opened fire, but he was hit by at least one bullet. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Columbus police officer, identified only as a four-year veteran, was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released late Sunday.
Police said Yusuf should not have possessed a gun while on duty. It is still not known why he tried to shoot his boss. Yusuf also had no known criminal history, authorities said.
