You might think that hair dusting involves some sort of powder or dirt removal, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.Hairdressers now reveal the real meaning behind the viral TikTok trend
Hundreds of hair care tips flood TikTok every day, but experts claim this particular trend is certainly worth the hype.
It’s no secret that social media is full of beauty hacks, from olive oil facials to Kardashian-inspired breast milk drinks. And it becomes increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction.
But after racking up more than 24 million views on the platform, one viral “hair dusting” trick is said to be an absolute keeper. You might think this would involve removing some kind of powder or dirt, but this could not be further from the truth.
In fact, this is a process where split ends are trimmed one by one, and it can be done not only at the salon but also at home. Dubai-based hairdresser The Hideaway is one of them, praising the technique on TikTok (@Thehideawaydubai).
“Have you ever tried hair dusting?” they asked. “We get rid of split ends and keep your hair long and healthy…we get rid of split ends without sacrificing an inch.”
Unsurprisingly, the post quickly garnered countless questions, with many users wanting to know if it would work for different hair textures and styles. One person wrote, “Why don’t you split it shorter?”, while another countered with, “Does it work on layered hair?” and “Do I have to straighten my hair beforehand?”
Amid all this confusion, salon experts at Roxy Hair reveal the do’s and don’ts of hair dusting, adding that if you want to try it at home, you’ll have to experiment a bit . They say, “This can be done by a salon professional or even at home, and this process allows you to maintain the length and shape of your hair while removing visible damage.”
“The first thing to do is [all] You will need scissors for hair cutting. Do not use standard kitchen scissors, as the blades need to be sharp and thin to make precise cuts. ”
Split ends are the part where your hair splits into two at the root, creating a Y-shape. These are generally the oldest parts of the hair strand and are formed over time due to dehydration, chemical damage, and weathering.
Leaving them in your hair for too long can hinder hair growth and even cause hair breakage. Therefore, it is important to cut your hair every 6 to 8 weeks to keep it healthy.
Once you get your hair dusting scissors, salon experts recommend sectioning your hair and then wrapping it tightly under your index finger and over your middle finger. Next, it is important to move your fingers slowly along the hair to cut off any protruding split ends.
“You can also twist your hair and do the same thing,” they continued. “This is a very time-consuming process, especially if you have thick hair, as you are cutting every single strand of hair. You go into this process expecting to catch all the split ends on your head. Please stop.”
Although this is a very simple process, the salon expert stressed that it is important not to cut off healthy hair in this way, as it can affect the density of the hair in the long run. . People with curly, layered hair may have trouble spotting split ends, so they may need to try different cutting techniques.
“There are several tutorials available online,” they added. “If you’re not confident in spotting split ends, consult a hairstylist who specializes in your hair type for best results.”
