EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants will go retro for several games this season. It’s very retro.
The Giants dug deep into their past, going back to their formative years, to create a special “Century Red” uniform to celebrate their 100th season.
New York will pay homage to the team’s past by wearing a special throwback up to two times this season. Specific match details and schedule have not been announced.
The 100th anniversary uniform consists of a modern version of the 1933 jersey, 1925 pants and socks, and 1938 helmet. The new look highlights important milestones, including the team’s founding in 1925, his first appearance in the NFL Championship Game in 1933, and his early championship win in 1938, giving him the distinction of being part of the oldest NFL team. tells the history of one of the.
“The Century Red uniforms are a modern twist on some of the earliest uniforms worn to honor the players who built the foundation of Giants football,” said Doug Murphy, Giants director of creative services. “There is,” he said. “Although we have brought back many recent uniform combinations, we carefully studied past Giants uniforms to ensure historical accuracy. This uniform is part of our 100th season celebration. I’m proud to be a part of it.”
The uniform was designed by Nike in collaboration with the Giants and combines memorable elements from the team’s past with a modern feel. For example, the 1933 jersey had long sleeves, but the modern version does not. The tan pants, red socks with blue horizontal stripes, the square cut of the numbers, the blue collar and shoulders, and the shape of the wings on the back of the helmet were all carefully considered for reproduction purposes.
This uniform is a reminder that Big Blue could easily become Big Red. Red made up the majority of the Giants’ color scheme for most of his first 30 years, until the Giants primarily used blue and white.
When an alternate uniform was introduced in 2004, the primary red resurfaced. As owner John Mara has jokingly lamented in the past, the Giants have not had a great record in the past, going 1-3 from 2004 to 2007.
The Century Red uniforms mark the second time in three years that the Giants have introduced remade vintage jerseys. They brought back versions of their classic uniforms from the 1980s and his 1990s during the 2022 season.
The Giants will wear the legacy uniforms introduced in 2022 in games this season, in addition to the new 100th Anniversary Edition, as part of the season’s 100th anniversary celebration this fall. They unveiled their 100th season patch that will be on all jerseys earlier this week.
As with the new uniforms, attention has also been paid to the details of the patch, which features a shield in the shape of its first home, the Polo Grounds. “100 Seasons” Zero is shaped like the former Giants baseball stadium where they won many championships. There are also eight of his laces representing each franchise’s title, and the central figure in his throwing motion takes inspiration from the classic Giants skyline logo.
“Planning for our 100th season began nearly two years ago and we are excited to celebrate this milestone with our fans, alumni and partners,” said Niray Shah, Giants senior vice president of marketing and brand strategy. said. “This season will be a time to look back at the players, moments and championship teams that defined the first 100 seasons of Giants football. We will celebrate with featured content, events and special activities throughout the season. .”
The activation includes: the announcement of the top 100 players in franchise history, the 100th Season Day at Yankee Stadium featuring a pinstriped Eli Manning bobblehead, and a documentary honoring longtime owner Wellington Mara, “The Duke,” and 10 grants of $100,000 each will be provided to dedicated partners by the Giants Foundation, among others.
And now they’re adding 100th anniversary uniforms to that mix.
The Giants open the season on September 8th against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
