The parade of Republican leaders outside the New York City courthouse where former President Donald Trump is being tried is “a little embarrassing,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said Wednesday.

“I think it’s a little humiliating to appear in front of a court that’s talking about allegations of pay, especially to porn stars,” Romney told reporters in Washington before a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Told.

The former president is on trial for allegedly falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.

Top Republican leaders, many of whom are on President Trump’s running mate list, marched outside the court last week to reinforce Trump’s baseless claims that the trial amounted to political “persecution.” He appeared in court along with the former president.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) attends a closed session of the full Senate to hear from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy via video conference at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on December 5, 2023. arrive at.

Visitors include Republican Sen. Rick Scott. J.D. Vance, Republican, Ohio. Rep. Byron Donald, R-Florida. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

“It’s really very difficult to watch,” Romney said of his visit to the courthouse. “We expect a level of dignity and decency from people who are running for the highest station in the land, prostrate themselves in public, and obviously trying to ingratiate themselves with our candidate. It’s a little embarrassing.”

The trip to the court is another litmus test for Republicans as they search for a running mate in the November election and seek to demonstrate loyalty to President Donald Trump as he rallies the party around him.

Johnson claimed on Tuesday that officials are using the trial to distance President Trump from his re-election campaign. There is no evidence that prosecutors or other court officials overseeing President Trump’s four criminal indictments are targeting the former president’s bid for the White House.

“This is the fifth week that President Trump has been in court for this sham trial,” Johnson said outside the courthouse.
