China’s first major sodium-ion battery energy storage facility has been put into operation, according to state-run power company China Southern Power Grid Energy Storage.
The Fulin Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Station began operations on May 11 in Nanning, the capital of southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The initial storage capacity is said to be 10 megawatt hours (MWh). Once fully developed, the station’s total capacity is expected to reach 100 MWh.
The 10MWh sodium-ion battery energy storage station uses 210Ah sodium-ion battery cells and charges to 90% in an astonishing 12 minutes, according to the state utility company. This system consists of 22,000 cells.
A project size of 100 MWh could potentially release 73,000 MWh of clean energy each year. This is enough for him to power 35,000 homes and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50,000 tons per year.
Gao Reik, manager of China Southern Power Grid’s Guangxi branch, said in an interview with China Central Television that the energy conversion efficiency of the company’s sodium-ion battery energy storage system is over 92%. This is comparable to the efficiency of typical lithium-ion battery storage systems, which is 85-95%.
Chen Man, senior engineer at China Southern Power Grid, said: [via the South China Morning Post] If sodium-ion battery energy storage enters large-scale development, the cost could be reduced by 20 to 30 percent. He continued:
This can be achieved through further improvements in sodium-ion battery structure, manufacturing processes, material utilization, and cycle life, reducing energy storage costs per unit of electricity.
Larger sodium-ion batteries are gaining momentum because they are cheaper than lithium-ion batteries and have abundant raw materials. Challenges with sodium-ion batteries include low energy density and short lifetimes, which can limit efficiency and long-term performance in large-scale applications.
