CNN political commentator Alice Stewart, who worked on various Republican presidential campaigns, passed away on Saturday, May 18th at the age of 58. Law enforcement officials told CNN she was found dead outside in the Bellevue area of northern Virginia.
Stewart is believed to have suffered a medical emergency. There is no suspicion of foul play.
“Alice was a very dear friend and colleague to all of us at CNN,” said Mark Thompson, the network’s CEO. “A political veteran and Emmy Award-winning journalist who brings unparalleled brilliance to CNN’s reporting, she is known throughout our bureau not only for her political knowledge but also for her unwavering kindness. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn this tremendous loss.”
It is unclear what kind of illness Stewart was battling, but he passed away suddenly. She was a frequent guest on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, and appeared on the show the day before her death. In her last Instagram post, she wrote, “It’s always a sunny day to join the amazing @wolfblitzer on #CNN with @mariacardonadc!”

Stewart, a Georgia native, has been a well-known face at CNN since joining the network before the 2016 election. “We always invited her to come on my show because we knew she could be a little bit smarter at the end of the conversation,” Blitzer told Jessica Deen on CNN Newsroom. Ta. “We will miss her greatly as she helped her viewers better understand what was going on.”
Stewart’s career began when she began working as a local reporter and producer in Georgia. She also worked as a news anchor in Little Rock, Arkansas. She eventually moved into politics.
Stewart later served as communications director for then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. She assumed a similar role during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Stewart served as communications director for the 2012 presidential campaign of former Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann and later former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, as well as the 2016 campaign of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Ta.
