Team USA continues its qualifying round for the Men’s World Hockey Championship on Sunday, May 19th, when it faces Kazakhstan.
Sunday’s game is scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m. ET at Ostrava Arena in the Czech Republic and will be broadcast on NHL Network. The United States defeated Poland 4-1 on Friday for the win. Brady Tkachuk scored a goal and added three assists in the win, helping the U.S. advance to the playoff round. Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustin stopped 20 shots, and Team USA improved to 3-1-1, moving into second place in the Group B standings. The final match of the qualifying round will be against Latvia on Tuesday, May 21st.

PRAGUE (AP) — Brady Tkachuk had a goal and three assists, Cole Caufield had two points and the United States beat Poland 4-1 in the preliminary round of the men’s world hockey championship on Friday. and qualified for the playoff round.
Michigan State goaltender Trey Augustin stopped 20 shots, including all 11 he faced in a scoreless first period. Michael Kesselring also scored, and the Americans improved to 3-1-1 and moved into second place in the Group B standings.
John Murray, a native of Lancaster, Pa., with Polish roots, stopped 53 shots through two periods, including 34 of the first 36 he faced, keeping the score close. Grzegorz Paciut scored Poland’s only goal with 13:38 left in the third period, briefly cutting the U.S. lead to 3-1.
Poland has 0 wins, 4 losses and 1 loss, and is in danger of being relegated.
Kesserling, a Utah NHL defenseman, scored the first goal 9:49 into the second period, set up by Tkachuk’s 3-on-1 rush.
Then Tkachuk, captain of the United States and the Ottawa Senators, broke a 2-on-1 with 42 seconds left in the frame to make it 2-0. Murray made the first stop on Shane Pinto, the puck got caught in Tkachuk’s skate and the forward was pushed from behind and crashed into the net.
The U.S. team completed the qualifying round against Kazakhstan on Sunday and Latvia on Tuesday.
In Group A, Dominik Kubalik and Jakub Flek scored second-period goals 64 seconds apart as the Czech Republic defeated Austria 4-0. Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek made 21 saves for the shutout victory, and the host Czech Republic improved to 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, taking first place in the pool.
Austria fell to 1-3-1.
Earlier in the day, JJ Peterka scored one goal and provided three assists, Wojciech Stachowiak scored four goals, and Germany defeated Kazakhstan 8-2 to qualify for the Group B playoffs.
Philipp Grubauer, who plays for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, stopped 18 shots. Peterka, a member of the Buffalo Sabres, scored the final game-winning goal 1:11 into the second period, giving the Germans a 3-1 lead.
Roman Starchenko and Artyom Korolev scored for Kazakhstan, who are in danger of being relegated with one win and four losses. Andrei Shutov allowed three goals on 10 shots, but was replaced by Nikita Boyalkin, who stopped 20 of 25 shots.
In the Group A qualifying round, Denmark beat undefeated Great Britain 4-3, with Christian Weisse scoring the winning goal with 7 minutes and 59 seconds left in the game.
Mikel Aagaard scored twice and Philipp Burgisser had a goal and an assist for the Danes, who ended a three-game losing streak and improved to 2 wins and 3 losses. Frederic Disho made 28 saves in the win.
Great Britain fell to 0-4 with Liam Kirk, Cade Neilson and Nathanael Hulbert scoring. Jackson Whistle made 24 saves for a competitive team despite its performance, opening the world championship with a 4-2 loss to Canada.
