Hardik Pandya endured a slump in the 2024 Indian Premier League. It was a controversial season from start to finish as Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the table with just four wins. Even before the first ball was bowled in IPL 2024, things were unstable in the Michigan camp. The appointment of Hardik Pandya as captain did not go down well with many Mumbai Indians fans, who slammed the higher-ups after the decision.
The situation remained the same when the season started, with Hardik being booed at the Wankhede Stadium in the first few games of the season. For the all-rounder, it didn’t help that his own performance was well below a satisfactory level. Pandya scored 216 runs in 14 matches with an average of 18.00, a strike rate of 143.04 and a best score of 46. He also took 11 wickets at an average of 35.18 and an economy rate of 10.75.
However, although Hardik has been selected in India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, there are doubts over the star all-rounder’s form ahead of next month’s tournament. However, former India star Suresh Raina didn’t pay much attention to Hardik’s struggles, saying that the all-rounder has featured in the Indian squad before, but all that will be forgotten when he “plays against Pakistan”. He said that it would be possible.
“He has done really well (for India). Just because someone is not doing well for a while doesn’t make him bad. If he performs well against Pakistan in the World Cup, everyone will be happy. I would praise him,” Raina said. Ani.
Hardik has been a key member of India’s T20I team for the past few years. He led the team in 2023 in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the duo focused intensely on the ODI World Cup. The senior star returned to T20Is earlier this year in the bilateral series against Afghanistan, with Rohit reappointing him the captaincy duties.

If Hardik joins the Indian team, there will be a change in leadership. After leading Rohit Sharma in the IPL, he will play the star opener in the T20 World Cup, where India are aiming for their first ICC title in 11 years.
The all-rounder has been named as Rohit’s replacement for the marquee tournament. India will open the World Cup against Ireland on June 5th, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on the 8th.
