Innovation was the name of the game at the 2007 T20 World Cup. Most of the players were new to the format and the fact that South Africa chased a target of over 200 in the tournament opener against West Indies showed that there are no limits for batsmen if they get the chance. The T20 format was the first format in which super overs were attempted and are now accepted as a way to end a drawn match in limited overs cricket. However, as of 2007, the Super Over was far from widespread, and what existed instead was the concept of bowl-outs.
It wasn’t a phenomenon that received much attention until it actually happened. It was so vague that Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik admitted after the memorable Group D match against India that he didn’t even know the rule existed.
Malik won the toss and made India bat first with MS Dhoni. Mohammad Asif returned impressive figures of 4/18 and a half-century from Robin Uthappa took India’s score to 141/9. Pakistan were eventually restricted to a total of 141/7 with Misbah-ul-Haq out on the last ball of the match. The match appeared to end in a draw, and both India and Pakistan qualified for the Super 8s, regardless of who was declared the winner in the bowl out.
As a result, even though the practice resembled a soccer penalty shootout, the players joked and laughed together, creating a much more upbeat atmosphere throughout the practice. Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Robin Uthappa bowled for India while Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul and Shahid Afridi bowled for Pakistan. The Indians all hit the stumps, the Pakistanis missed, and the former won 3-0.
Bowl outs were not well received and, understandably, were the only instances in which this rule was applied to decide a tied game. Even captain Dhoni, who won the match, admitted that he did not want to see the match decided like this. “I don’t want to see a cricket match decided by a bowl out,” Dhoni told reporters after the match. “The team is playing hard to get a result, and the result should always be decided on the field.”
He said it was a strange feeling to win the cricket match 3-0. “It’s really funny. It doesn’t happen every time you win a cricket match 3-0. But now it goes on record. You can tell your friends that when I was captain, the team won 3-0. “I will,” he said. Dhoni.
