Midnapore (West Bengal): Stones were thrown by some people during actor-turned-Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mithun Chakraborty’s roadshow in Midnapore town on Tuesday, followed by clashes, police said.
Agnimitra Paul, the BJP candidate for Midnapore Lok Sabha seat, which goes to polls on May 25, accused Trinamool Congress workers of hurling glass bottles and stones at the procession, a charge denied by the state ruling party.
Chakraborty and Paul were unharmed in the incident.
The roadshow began at Collect More and proceeded towards Kelanitra, where hundreds of BJP supporters raised slogans and Mr. Chakraborty waved to the crowd from his car with Paul next to him.
However, when the roadshow reached Shekhupura More, some people standing on the roadside threw stones and bottles at the procession, after which Bharatiya Janata Party workers charged towards them and clashes broke out. , a police officer said, adding that the situation was quickly brought under control.
“The TMC resorts to such hooliganism as it fears growing support for the BJP. They can stoop so low as to disrespect legendary actors like Misun Chakraborty.” Paul said.
She blamed TMC street corner participants for inciting the violence.
“These actions by those who sought to cause disruption to a peaceful motorcade are despicable,” Paul said.
TMC spokesperson Trinankur Bhattacharya denied the allegations and said, “We do not believe in such underhanded behaviour. The BJP itself is staging the drama as the roadshow was a huge failure.”
