Buyers continued to cash in on top quality promising colts during a solid final session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Old Horse Training Sale held May 21 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. He indicated his intention to invest.
A total of 188 horses were sold for a total of $18,949,500 on the second day of the auction, with an average price of $100,795. The median price was $50,000, with a total of 35 horses unsold during the session.
In total, 375 animals sold for $34,795,500 in 2023, compared to 343 animals sold for a gross proceeds of $32,751,500, based on the two days of auction trading. This year’s average price of $95,485 set a record. That figure was up from last year’s average of $92,788 and surpassed the 2022 record of $95,391. This year’s median price of $50,000 is the same as last year’s median price and tied for a sales record. A total of 71 horses failed to fill the reserve quota this year, compared to 62 last year.
Sales results reflect a deep and diverse international buying bench over the two days of trading, with notable buyers from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Japan and South Korea. International buyers were active across a wide range of markets.
“This is very encouraging activity,” said Boyd Browning, president and CEO of Fasig-Tipton. “The sale got a huge boost and energy from international participation, especially from the Gulf region. We should all be praying that horses exported from the U.S. will have great success racing in the Middle East next year, because it will continue to drive growing interest in our market.”
“I think everyone in the United States would point to the Middle East as an expanding market.The move towards dirt racing continues, and the whole horse racing industry is primarily focused on dirt racing from a breeding standpoint. So it’s a great opportunity to expand the market. The majority of horses in the U.S. are run on dirt, so I think buyers will feel comfortable buying on dirt tracks.”

Top seller in the final session was the filly Hip 401. Volt d’Oro Sold to Winchell Thoroughbreds for $1.25 million. The transaction marks the ninth consecutive year of seven-figure sales. Consigned by Wavertree Stables (Ciaran Dunne) to produce a filly out of his winning Arch mare. Werewolf The precocious filly, bred at Spring House Farm in Kentucky, was purchased by Havertz Bloodstock from the Paramount Sale consignment at the 2023 Keeneland September Racetrack for $335,000. In Friday’s final tack session, he finished eighth with a time of 10 seconds.
