CHANDIGARH: A meeting was held in Mohali to discuss and implement initiatives to make Punjab’s Anandpur Sahib constituency a model for ‘green elections’ in the country.
General observer Dr Heera Lal along with police observer Sandeep Gajanan Dewan and expenditure observer Shilpi Sinha held a meeting with all district election officers and other officials of the constituency, an official statement said here.
“The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and implement initiatives to make Anandpur Sahib a model for green elections in the country,” the statement said.
Several important decisions were taken at the meeting, including planting a significant number of trees to neutralize the amount of carbon generated from waste and plastic use during the election, he said.
Additionally, efforts were made to recognize the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who had the highest turnout in each constituency in the 2019 elections to increase turnout in the next Lok Sabha elections.
General Observer Lal stressed the importance of conducting a free, fair and environmentally friendly electoral process and stressed on the need to minimise the use of single-use plastic and maintain cleanliness throughout the electoral process.
As a follow-up to the meeting, a sapling was planted at the district administration complex in Mohali as part of the ‘Green Elections’ initiative.
It said pupils and staff would each plant a sapling on voting day and also pledge to avoid single-use plastics.
Such efforts will not only contribute to cleaner, greener elections but also set a good example for other districts to follow, the report said.
