“I wanted to explain why…”: UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak after July 4 election announcement

NEW DELHI: British Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a snap election for July 4, saying the country must decide whether to continue with the progress made under his government or risk a return to uncertainty.

In a video posted to X, Chancellor Sunak highlighted that UK economic growth is now outpacing that of France, Germany and the US. He also noted that inflation has returned to normal levels, showing that the government’s plans and priorities are working.

“I just returned from announcing the general election and wanted to explain why our economy is currently growing faster than France, Germany and the US. And this morning we have the good news that inflation is back to normal. ,” Finance Minister Sunak said in the video.

The Chancellor acknowledged that the road has not been easy and that people are only starting to feel the benefits, but stressed that hard-won economic stability is just the beginning. “I now believe that our plan, and the bold action we are prepared to take, will deliver a secure future for you, your families and the UK,” Mr Sunak added.

The decision to call a general election is surprising. That’s because Mr Sunak was not obliged to vote until January 2025. The announcement came in the wake of falling inflation rates, which prompted his decision. After six weeks of campaigning, Mr Sunak’s Conservative government is widely expected to collapse, with Keir Starmer’s opposition Labor party leading in opinion polls.

In other news, the UK Parliament recently passed a controversial bill that would allow the government to send asylum seekers to Rwanda to consider their claims. The bill has been opposed in Parliament and challenged in the UK courts, with lawmakers and activists trying to block it on human rights grounds. The policy is intended to prevent illegal immigration to the UK, particularly via illegal and dangerous small boats from France organised by criminal gangs.
