This week, more than 100 pizza makers in Connecticut joined community leaders and elected officials in Washington, D.C., to make a special proclamation.
“We’re here to proclaim New Haven the pizza capital of America,” said U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3rd District), a New Haven native.
Rep. DeLauro made the statement into the Congressional Record on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday afternoon.
Attendees included Colin Caplan of Taste of New Haven and Jennifer Kelly, granddaughter of Frank Pepe.
“I thought about my grandparents. I thought about my mother, my aunts, my uncles, my brothers, my cousins. How hard they all work,” said Kelly, co-owner of Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. “I respect them, just like every other pizza restaurant here. They respect family. That’s what it’s all about.”
The proclamation allows Connecticut to add “Pizza State” to its list of titles.
