Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai takes one stroke lead at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship

Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai takes one stroke lead at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship

Georgia Tech’s Hiroshi Tai shot a 5-under 67 and recorded seven birdies to take the lead in the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.

Tye started his round on the 10th hole with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole, then headed into the front nine in 2 under par, birdieing the first, second, fourth and ninth holes before bogeying the fifth hole to enter the clubhouse at 5 under par.

Ohio State’s Adam Wallin got in early and got going with a 4-under 68. He started the first two holes at 2-under and finished with 6 birdies and 2 bogeys.

Carl Vilips, who won the Pac-12 individual conference championship, is tied for third at 3 under with Florida’s John Dubois. Baylor’s Jonny Keefer, Arizona’s Tiger Christensen and Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht are tied for fifth at 2 under.

Lamprecht is currently ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com world rankings.

The crowded leaderboard has five golfers tied for eighth place at one under par and 12 golfers tied for 13th place at even par.

Golfers to watch after the opening 18 holes include Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent, who is tied for 63rd at 3 over par, Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen, who is tied for 41st at 2 over par, and Ohio State’s Neil Shipley, who is tied for 97th at 5 over par.

Sargent and Thorbjornsen are the top two golfers in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com world rankings, while Shipley was the lowest-ranked amateur entering the 2024 Masters Tournament.

In the team competition, Arizona and Virginia are tied for the lead at 2 over par, while North Carolina is one stroke back in sole third place at 3 over par.

Georgia Tech is in fourth place at 4 over par, while Illinois and Auburn are tied for fifth at 5 over par, Ohio State is in seventh place at 6 over par, and defending champion Florida is in eighth place at 7 over par.

Texas, Notre Dame and East Tennessee State University rounded out the top 10 with ninth place at eight over par.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship will feature 30 teams and six individuals not on a qualifying team.

After 72 holes of stroke play, an individual champion will be determined and the bottom eight teams will advance to match play to determine the team champion.
