BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham marketplace is putting the spotlight on Black-owned businesses.
At the end of each month, over 40 Black-owned businesses will gather at CityWalk BHAM to showcase their products and services in the Modern Green Book Marketplace.
Organizers say the marketplace promotes diversity and inclusion in the community and helps boost the local economy, where people can find everything from designer clothing to fresh, locally grown vegetables.
Organizers say the marketplace attracts large numbers of visitors, and shopkeepers say the high footfall has boosted their sales.
“This is my second market,” said Jacqueline Jackson, an urban farmer who owns Mattie’s Gardens. “I think I’ve built a relationship with the community and we’ve definitely had some repeat customers, so that’s a great sign.”
Business owners said coming together and supporting each other brings more than sales and profits.
“Not only will you be able to use and sell your own products, but you’ll also be able to socialize and see other great businesses in Birmingham,” said Sherice Cobbin, owner of clothing brand SHEEPBLACK Designs.
The Modern Green Book Marketplace takes place on the last Saturday of every month from 4pm to 8pm.
